The Fertility Awareness Method
Your cycle is data. FAM teaches you how to read it.
No hormones, no guessing, no apps doing the thinking for you. Just a clear, evidence-based method for understanding your own body.
So what actually is FAM?
The Fertility Awareness Method is a way of tracking your menstrual cycle by observing the physical signs your body produces naturally — things like basal body temperature, cervical mucus, and cervical position. These signs change throughout your cycle in predictable ways, telling you exactly where you are in relation to ovulation.
When you learn to read these signs accurately, you can identify your fertile window — the days each cycle when pregnancy is actually possible. That knowledge is powerful whether you want to avoid pregnancy, achieve it, or simply understand what’s going on with your body.
The sympto-thermal method has been researched extensively. When taught and used correctly, it is highly effective. It is not the rhythm method, it is not an app algorithm, and it is not a guess.
Let’s clear a few things up
FAM is NOT
❌ The rhythm method
❌ Counting days on a calendar
❌ An app predicting your cycle
❌ Only for people trying to conceive
❌ Unreliable when used correctly
❌ A spiritual or religious practice
FAM IS
✔️ Based on observable body signs
✔️ Backed by peer-reviewed research
✔️ Effective for avoiding or achieving pregnancyy signs
✔️ Useful for understanding your health
✔️ Something anyone can learn
✔️ Completely hormone-free
How it works
1
Observe
Each day you observe and record two or three physical signs — your waking temperature, your cervical mucus, and optionally your cervical position.
2
Chart
You record these observations on a simple chart. Over a few cycles, a clear pattern emerges that shows you exactly when you are and aren’t fertile.
3
Interpret
Using a set of clear, evidence-based rules, you identify your fertile window each cycle. This is where working with an educator makes all the difference.
Is the sympto-thermal method actually effective?
Yes — when taught properly and used correctly. A landmark prospective study published in Human Reproduction (Frank-Herrmann et al., 2007) followed 900 women over 17,638 cycles using the sympto-thermal method. With perfect use — meaning no unprotected intercourse during the identified fertile window — the pregnancy rate was just 0.6 per 100 women per 13 cycles.
The key phrase is “used correctly” — which is exactly why working with a qualified educator matters. The STM isn’t complicated, but it does need to be learned properly.

FAM vs the pill — a quick comparison
| FAM (Sympto-thermal) | Combined pill | |
|---|---|---|
| Hormones | None | Synthetic oestrogen & progestogen |
| Effectiveness (perfect use) | 99.4% | 99.7% |
| Side effects | None | Mood changes, libido, headaches and more |
| Cycle awareness | Full — you understand every phase | None — cycle is suppressed |
| Fertility return | Immediate | Can take months |
| Learning curve | Yes — 1—3 cycles to gain confidence | None |
Who is FAM for?
FAM works for women at almost any reproductive life stage. You don’t need a regular cycle to start learning — in fact, learning to chart often helps you understand why your cycle is irregular in the first place.
Women come to FAM for all sorts of reasons. Here are some of the most common:
